Spelling Program

The Grade 3's will be starting a new Spelling program to help them practise and learn English spelling rules so that they can become more accurate spellers and therefore more efficient writers.  On Mondays, your child will write down 14 Spelling Words into their agendas to study and practise for their Friday Spelling Test.  We will then correct the tests in class on Friday.  We will make sure to also post the words weekly on the blog to ensure they can find the 14 words for the week.

Data Management expectations

We are moving into our next unit in Math on Data Management. The expectations for the next few weeks are as follows:

  • I can organize, sort, and classify objects into categories using two or more attributes
  • I can collect data by conducting a simple survey
  • I can collect and organize data and display the data in charts, tables and graphs, with appropriate titles and labels
  • I can read data presented in charts, tables, and graphs, then describe the data using comparative language
  • I can interpret and draw conclusions from data
  • I can demonstrate an understanding of mode and identify the mode in a set of data
Some ways that you can practise at home:

Sort objects at home (sort fruit and veggies into the fridge after shopping, sort coins in different ways), take surveys at home (who likes to eat chicken better than beef, who likes olives on their pizza), if you see a graph or table in a book, newspaper, magazine, social media - ask your child to show you the labels, ask which is most popular, or least popular, what does the graph tell you?

Place Value links to games

Just a reminder that our Place Value Test will be this Tuesday after the Thanksgiving weekend.  The students were told they could bring their yellow Math Makes Sense workbook home to review the pages we've worked on and to read the "Quick Review" sections as a way to study.  Here are some links to games that can help your child review the concepts taught that will be on the test.

Hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving weekend!

Rounding Numbers to 10

This week we will be looking at rounding numbers to the nearest 10.  Here are some videos that help to explain how to round.  Talk to your children about when and where in the real world you use rounding numbers (when grocery shopping, when buying food for a large group, etc...).
